Prior to becoming a town in the 1840s, Corozal was a private estate. Years before the Maya city of Santa Rita existed in the area that is now Corozal. Santa Rita is now an archeological site in the town. This may have been the original town called Chetumal, which is now the name of the city in Mexico just across the border.
